Instant Pot Duo 6 Qt Manual First Steps Cooking Programs and Care

Getting Comfortable with Your Instant Pot
The Instant Pot Duo 7‑in‑1 replaces several kitchen appliances in one. But the box comes with a safety booklet and a thin recipe guide, not a detailed walkthrough. This guide explains the parts, the programs, the steam release, and how to keep the pot working perfectly for years. Keep it handy whenever a new error appears or a function feels unfamiliar.
Items in the Box and Setup Overview

Inside the package you will find:
- The Instant Pot base with the control panel
- A removable stainless steel inner pot
- The pressure cooking lid with a sealing ring and float valve
- A steam rack (trivet) with handles
- A power cord (3‑prong, detachable)
- A quick start guide and safety booklet
Wash the inner pot, lid, and steam rack with warm soapy water before first use. Dry them completely. The outer base must never be submerged.
How the Lid and Sealing Ring Work

The lid locks into place when you align the arrow on the lid with the open lock symbol on the base, then turn clockwise. A sound chimes when the lid is properly closed and opened.
- Sealing ring: A flexible silicone ring that fits inside the lid. It must be seated correctly or the pot won’t pressurize. Over time, the ring may absorb odours; washing it with vinegar and water or placing it in the sun can help.
- Float valve: A small metal pin that pops up when the pot is pressurized. Never force the lid open when the float valve is up.
- Steam release handle: Turn it to “Venting” to release steam manually. Turn it to “Sealing” before pressure cooking.
The Control Panel and What Each Program Does

The Duo has buttons for specific food types as well as manual controls.
- Pressure Level: Press this to switch between High and Low pressure. Most recipes use High.
- Manual / Pressure Cook: Press this button to set your own cooking time. Then use the + and – keys to adjust minutes.
- Sauté: Press to heat the inner pot with the lid open. Useful for browning meat or sautéing onions. Press again to adjust temperature to Less, Normal, or More.
- Slow Cook: The pot works as a slow cooker. The lid is placed in the venting position or a glass lid can be used.
- Steam: Use the steam rack, add water, and set time. The pot heats rapidly to steam vegetables or fish.
- Rice: Automatically sets a low‑pressure cooking time for white rice.
- Porridge: For oatmeal, congee, etc. Use natural release to avoid foaming through the valve.
- Keep Warm / Cancel: Press to stop any program. The Keep Warm function automatically starts after cooking unless turned off.
Understanding Natural and Quick Steam Release
- Natural release: Let the pot sit after the timer ends. The float valve drops on its own. This takes 10–30 minutes. Ideal for foamy foods, soups, and large cuts of meat.
- Quick release: Turn the steam release handle to “Venting.” A jet of steam shoots out. Keep hands and face away. Use this for delicate vegetables and quick proteins.
- Intermittent release: For starchy foods, release steam in short bursts (turn to venting for 2 seconds, back to sealing, repeat) to prevent splatters.
Cooking Programs That Need a Little Extra Care
- Sauté: Always add oil or liquid to the inner pot before heating. Do not leave the pot unattended on high sauté.
- Rice and grains: Rinse rice before cooking to reduce starch. Use the provided measuring cup (a “rice cup” is ¾ of a standard cup). Let the pressure release naturally for at least 10 minutes.
- Steam: Use at least 1 cup of water. A quick release works well. The steam rack keeps food out of the water.
- Yogurt: The yogurt program is used in stages — pasteurize milk, cool, add starter, incubate. Follow a trusted recipe.
Cleaning and Preventing Lingering Odours

- After every use, wash the inner pot, lid, and steam rack. The inner pot is dishwasher safe.
- The sealing ring should be removed and washed after each use. If odours persist, soak it in a white vinegar and water solution for 30 minutes, then air dry.
- Wipe the control panel and outer base with a damp cloth. Never pour water into the base.
- Clean the anti‑block shield (the small metal cover inside the lid) regularly by pulling it off and rinsing.
Error Codes and How to Respond

| Code | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| C1 | Faulty temperature sensor | Unplug for 2 minutes, plug back in. If the code returns, contact support. |
| C2 | Faulty pressure sensor | Same as C1. |
| C5 | Temperature too high because inner pot is empty or dry | Press Cancel. Let the pot cool. Ensure there is enough liquid inside. |
| C6 | Pressure sensor detects excess pressure | Turn the steam release handle to Venting to release pressure. Check the float valve and steam release for blockages. |
| C6H | Overheat warning | The pot has turned off for safety. Unplug, let cool, check for food burn on the bottom of the inner pot. |
| Lid | Lid is not in the correct position for the selected program | Open and close the lid. For Sauté, the lid must be off. |
| Burn | Food burning on the bottom of the inner pot | Cancel and quick release. Open the lid, scrape any stuck food from the bottom, add more thin liquid, and restart. |
Restarting and Factory Reset
- Simple restart: Press Cancel, then unplug the pot for 10 seconds. Plug it back in.
- Factory reset: The Duo doesn’t have a dedicated reset button. Unplugging the pot for 30 minutes clears all temporary settings. Custom programs are not stored.
